The Bastide

The term “bastide” means “new town”. They were founded by the kings of France and England between 1150 and 1350 in the South West of France. Eymet was established on June 28th 1270 by Alphonse de Poitiers, Count of Toulouse and brother to Louis IX. This master builder built at least 50 other bastides including Villeréal, Monflanquin, and Castillonnès!
